NFIRS to NERIS in 2025

For all its warts, NFIRS is what we know. Moving to NERIS might be good, it might be tough, it might be both. Together let's make this painless, that would be crushing it!

Send me your NERIS questions and I'll answer them, or work to get answers.

What is your NERIS identifier?

Some of you have asked about your NERIS identifiers. NERIS has been pre-populated with a number of fire departments, and I've posted them here for browsing by state/territory. Is your NERIS identifier here? Don't worry if not (but I'd be curious to know so I can help get it added.)

Get #NERIS-ready

NERIS will start to roll out across the country, region by region, and aims to be out before 2026. Expect your invite closer to the middle of 2025. ( I've become an early adopter for my VFD, and am going through the onboarding now, but this is what NERIS suggests for getting #NERIS-ready, see button/link. That said, I am finding that a lot of data is pre-populated for us from existing sources, so check before you roll up your GIS & GPS sleeves. )

Filed your NFIRS for 2024, 2023 or 2022?

Note: NERIS is NOT going to accept incidents before 2025, so if you'd like "three years of past incident data" submit to support your grant applications, ensure you file your NFIRS before end of 2025. If not, you might have a gap.

For those new to this mailing list ...

First, welcome to you all. 😀 Second, here are some interesting NERIS articles:

  • We all know that fires evolve so much faster these days, and NERIS is designed to monitor the time factors of fire.
  • Fewer of us knew that modern construction materials plus lightning were so dangerous, but NERIS is monitoring fires involving Corrugated Stainless Steel Tubing (CSST).
  • The emerging hazard of electrical fires are a big focus, of course. Everything from power generation, to power storage, to gadget charging and more. NERIS is tracking this.
  • NERIS is designed to be extensible, for when the next challenge comes along, but you can tell a lot about our current challenges by looking at what it is designed to capture today.

2025 should be an interesting year for VFDs.

RESPONSERACK VOL FIRE DEPT SOFTWARE Just a brief update today. Some insights into these NERIS types ... Apparatus / Units and Locations One of the benefits of the reworking of NFIRS to NERIS is filling some of the bigger gaps, many of which have just grown over time. This is the case for both locations and apparatus/unit types. NERIS Locations - Place Details NFIRS helped locate a place (e.g. an address or intersection), but NERIS helps locate a place within a place (e.g. Section 30, Row 12,...

RESPONSERACK VOL FIRE DEPT SOFTWARE NERIS builds upon NFIRS: A firefighter recently joked that NFIRS stood for “Not Functional In Real Situations”, and certainly it does have limitations when it comes to describing incidents. NERIS allows more flexibility in reporting the type of incident, supports capturing important new data, and brings mapping capabilities (like GIS.) Learn more below ...
