NERIS from 2023 and into 2025

NFIRS might've felt too entrenched and monolithic to be replaced, but it is being replaced. This is happening folks!

NERIS was first announced in May 2023, was developed over 2023 & 2024, and version 1 was released in November 2024. NERIS will roll out replacing NFIRS in 2025.

Most fire department will start working with NERIS in the later part of 2025, so don't worry, there is time for your fire department to learn about NERIS. I'll help you here.

Responserack and NERIS

Here at Responserack I've been working closely with the NERIS development team to ensure that Responserack meets the moment, and Responserack customers have an easy and painless transition.

Here are some of the interesting things I've learned

  • We all know that fires evolve so much faster these days, and NERIS is designed to monitor the time factors of fire.
  • Fewer of us knew that modern construction materials plus lightning were so dangerous, but NERIS is monitoring fires involving Corrugated Stainless Steel Tubing (CSST).
  • The emerging hazard of electrical fires are a big focus, of course. Everything from power generation, to power storage, to gadget charging and more. NERIS is tracking this.
  • NERIS is designed to be extensible, for when the next challenge comes along, but you can tell a lot about our current challenges by looking at what it is designed to capture today.

NERIS is modern technology that allows systems like Responserack to work with it in realtime, which is a significant advancement over the 1970s "export files" emailed or uploaded. NERIS should be significantly easier for fire department administrators to work with.

Time will tell as 2025 rolls on, but 2025 should be an interesting year for VFDs.

Apparatus / Units and Locations One of the benefits of the reworking of NFIRS to NERIS is filling some of the bigger gaps, many of which have just grown over time. This is the case for both locations and apparatus/unit types. NERIS Locations - Place Details NFIRS helped locate a place (e.g. an address or intersection), but NERIS helps locate a place within a place (e.g. Section 30, Row 12,...

RESPONSERACK VOL FIRE DEPT SOFTWARE NERIS builds upon NFIRS: A firefighter recently joked that NFIRS stood for “Not Functional In Real Situations”, and certainly it does have limitations when it comes to describing incidents.
